Roundhouse Is A
Lodge Like No Other
by GARRY FRASER
This tranquil and traditional Angus lodge is an ideal retreat
JUST how do you fix straight curtain-poles to a curved
wall? Well, you steam them so that they bend! It
sounds simple – but only after you know it – and that
was just one of the tricks of the trade picked up by Pam
and Mark Aitchison when they took on the task of the
refurbishment of Knockshannoch Lodge, Glenisla, the last
remaining thatched roundhouse in Scotland.
Available for weekly hire all year round, Knockshannoch Lodge in Glen Isla is ideally situated for exploring Perthshire, Angus and the Southern Highlands. Located on the edge of the Cairngorm National Park you can enjoy walking, skiing, golfing, fishing and many more outdoor sports and activities are easily accessible from Glen Isla.
Knockshannoch Lodge is the only remaining thatched roundhouse in Scotland. Built in 1880 as the gatehouse to a hunting and shooting lodge, the cottage accommodation offers two bedrooms, one double bed and two adult sized bunk beds, a spacious kitchen and dining area with woodburning stove, bathroom with bath and overhead shower and a comfortable lounge with woodburning stove. The cottage has been lovingly restored and converted into a family holiday home by the current owners over the last three years.
Both the shooting lodge and gatehouse were built to be circular so the devil couldn't hide in the corners!
Glen Isla is a beautiful glen, a mixture of farms, forest, heather moorland with breathtaking scenery, 95% of the glen is organically farmed and this shows in the abundance of wildlife. The Angus Glens are famed for rare alpine species, golden eagles and sea eagles and the rare Scottish wildcat. The cottage garden has visitors including red squirrels, many bird species including long tailed tits and wood peckers, owls, red and roe deer and a family of pine martens. Most days you will see buzzards overhead and in the warmer months there are bats roosting nearby.
Maintained and run by the owners Mark & Pam, we look forward to welcoming you.
